Employee survey: motivation improved again

Inside Komax

The broad-based survey of 1,864 Komax Group employees worldwide was conducted in 2020 in the middle of the coronavirus pandemic in summer. Despite the extraordinary circumstances, the results are encouraging. In particular, employee motivation is high. Concrete optimization measures are now being implemented on an ongoing basis.

Key insights

  • Every three years, Komax carries out an employee survey at 30 locations worldwide. This enables targeted monitoring of its data.

  • The 2020 survey fell in the middle of the coronavirus pandemic in summer. Nevertheless, the results are very positive. Employee satisfaction is particularly encouraging.

  • Based on feedback from over 1,500 employees, specific optimization measures are now being implemented locally in the companies.

The Komax Group conducts staggered employee surveys every three years at more than 30 locations worldwide (details of the survey in the info box). This regular feedback enables Komax to monitor its data in a targeted way. In 2020, the survey took place in 16 companies. Due to coronavirus, the survey had to be postponed from spring to late summer. Komax invited 1,864 employees to participate, and 1,546 took part – an excellent response rate of 83 percent. Now the results are in.

Almost 60 percent see themselves as ambassadors

A particularly positive aspect of the companies that participated is how motivated their employees are. This has continued to improve at a high level over the past three years, to 73 out of 100 points – a good result, even in comparison with other international companies. Employees at Komax feel most motivated by the friendly and respectful way people treat each other. Other important factors include the support from managers and the fact that Komax accepts responsibility for the environment and society. It is very gratifying to note that 59 percent of employees see themselves as ambassadors for Komax and feel an above-average sense of connection with the company and their work.

Optimization measures being implemented locally

The results vary by company and are presented to the employees individually by the local managing directors. The next step is to discuss the results in workshops and work out improvement measures together with the employees to ensure that motivating factors are further cultivated and demotivating factors are eliminated. For example, organizational structures are being simplified and employees’ roles are being more clearly defined in order to bring about faster decisions. Internal training offerings are also being expanded in order to give employees opportunities for personal development. In other companies, internal communication is being improved and managers are receiving specific training. In some cases, the management structures are also being adapted. These and other measures will be implemented in the coming months.

The employee survey will be conducted again in the same companies in three years’ time. By then, at the latest, it will be clear whether the jointly defined measures are having an impact and whether employee satisfaction at Komax can be increased even further.

Completely anonymous survey

  • The independent, neutral company ValueQuest, a global specialist in employee surveys, conducts the surveys for Komax. Anonymity and discretion are paramount, which is why Komax has outsourced the entire survey process to ValueQuest and at no point has access to the responses of individual employees.

All employees at the participating companies were given access to a standardized, structured questionnaire based on the values of the Komax Group. When evaluating the results, not only were the answers to the individual questions analyzed, but also their effect on employee motivation or demotivation.
